Capstone Project: Part 5 – SBAR Proposal and Final Project
This week marks the beginning of the final piece of your Capstone Project, where you develop an SBAR Proposal and a PowerPoint presentation that would be viewed by the hospital executives. The objective of Part 5 is to pitch your program plan.
I have modified the assignment and there is no video. Please follow the instructions below. (I am unable to edit the Capstone Project template.)
NOTE: You must demonstrate that you understand what an SBAR is and how to complete the SBAR for your project. This may be included as part of your PowerPoint but the presentation should include all of the relevant detail you have worked on over the past five weeks.
FINAL PROJECT – WEEK SIX ASSIGNMENT:
Now that you have researched and detailed a project for the past five weeks, you are ready to make your presentation. You will summarize the details from your research these past five weeks as well as present an SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation) proposal for the new or improved health care service that you want to introduce into the community’s health care system.
At this point, you should be assuming a role as an influencer (healthcare or community leader) who is presenting to a body of decision-makers that can help make your proposal a reality. Do not write this presentation to sound like an assignment or just a generic presentation, but speak as though you are pitching your proposal and want to end with actionable steps.
Consider these scenarios but be creative based on your situation and experience:
Hospital administrator who recognizes where there is a need for additional or enhanced services. This could be a new department or a revision to existing departments.
President or Board Member of a community organization that sees an opportunity to bring revenue into the community.
Department head that sees the need for new or enhanced services to meet the need of the population. For example, an Emergency Room leader sees how an urgent care center would provide better care and eliminate bottlenecks or other problems in ER.
Manager of an independent physician office that wants to open an after-hours clinic that would operate differently than scheduled appointments. This could be to combat the competition from “retail clinics” or to deal with access issues where the appointment schedule won’t accommodate the overload of patients wanting same-day appointments.
Please note those examples are to feed your think tank and do not need to be selected or used as they are written.
Create a PowerPoint presentation with a minimum of 12 slides. Some of the content may be better presented as handouts (for example, your floor plan or organizational chart). Use your own discretion in the best way to present your information. If you are going to use handouts or attachments, I recommend also having a slide with detailed speaker’s notes for the content; then you could include a note to “See Attachment One” or “See details in the packet you have been provided”, etc. PLEASE DO NOT USE VOICEOVERS; WRITTEN SPEAKER NOTES ARE REQUIRED.
Include the following information although the order will vary based on how you want to present your proposal. This assignment will require you to use critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to organize your material for presentation.
Introduce yourself and greet your selected audience. Be sure to have a clear understanding of who you are presenting to and what actions you are wanting them to take. For example, your audience could be members of the community, decision-makers from local healthcare organizations, potential investors, etc. Can you see how your presentation will vary based on your intended audience? Summary: Your introduction should clearly present your role, your audience, and the purpose for your presentation in the wording you would use if making the presentation in person.
Include information on the SBAR process as well as detailing each element with information from your research for the project. Inform your audience of the basics of SBAR (see acronym below). You will organize your information appropriately so that you have the relevant information for each part of the SBAR. (Your SBAR information can be a handout or integrated into your slides; your presentation should mention the handout if you are choosing that option.)
Summary: Your presentation should include a brief recap of what an SBAR is and why it is being used whether the actual SBAR (see acronym below) is in the presentation or attached.
SBAR:
Situation
Background
Assessment
Recommendation
End with a call to action that clearly states what you are expecting to happen after you present. Wrap up your presentation as if you were actually presenting with appropriate thank yous, time for questions and answers, and specific “next steps” in your call to action. Summary: What do you want
