You must research the composer and their life, their circumstances for composing the piece (commission? To dedicate to someone? For their own performance?), and the piece itself, i.e., what is its form, how was it received when premiered (did people like it?), and things such as what affect did it have on music history (did it advance form or musical language? Did other composers copy this piece’s ideas? Etc.).

The way to compose (building techniques like the so called “Blocks”, orchestrate, uses of new harmonies, etc. I can attach some more info, like a direct comparison between “The Rite of the Spring” and Varèse composition “Ameriques”, where it is shown how the later takes/uses materials from the former.
